In the shadows is where she’s been hiding. Afraid to face herself, although some call her a rebel, she is a rebel with nothing to stand against. A home schooled pre-teen yearning to spread her wings and take on the world; or so she thought. The fear of failure is constantly reminding her of why the shadows are an easy retreat. An easy way out of things. She can blame it on her past for the way she acts. She can blame it on her parents for sheltering her from the unavoidable realities in her life; stuck is where she finds herself and stuck is not where she wants to be. In the end, she is the one who has to live with herself. She is to blame. She let the safety of the shadows consume her, and harden her heart. She stands behind the glory of her older sister with an envious admiration. She is fueled by dry tears. Wants more of herself. But how can she shake the leech of the shadow? It follows her now; calls to her when time get tough. I was her, but now I’m choosing to be free!
I refuse to be defined by who I was and looking to who I will be. It is now that I am, and the future is me. I whole heartedly believe that once I am placed in the college environment, I will be able to become more of myself. The new beginning will allow me to have a fresh start and gain a greater universal view on life as it pertains to me and the ones I encounter on life’s ginger journey. I am ready to begin the next chapter of my life and higher education will push my life’s pages even more magnificently then ever imaginable. I will be the positive change of the future. It’s time for something new; that something new is me.
Living in a family of seven, self-motivation is the only way to be successful. Since all my siblings are fighting for my parents’ attention, I have to depend on myself in order to get things done. At times, though, it seems that life throws a whirlpool of impossible obstacles my way. My youngest brother, who is five, suffers from a severe case of autism. It’s always a challenge to communicate with him because he doesn’t speak. Because of his disability, its hard for him to make friends and he usually likes to keep to himself. But I make sure that I make time to talk to him even if he doesn’t talk back because that’s my responsibility as his big sister. He’ll never be alone if I’m around.
My mothers left arm is permanently paralyzed due to a car accident she suffered as a young adult. I look up to her because even though she can only use one arm, she’s never let that stop her from being my mother. She can do laundry, drive a car, and cook better than some of my friends’ moms who have both of their working arms. She’s taught me that even though life throws obstacles my way, nothing is impossible if I endure. Although these obstacles may seem to be negative effects on my daily life, I am able to overcome them with my family’s support.
In fact, these obstacles are what bring us together and allow us to understand that although the tunnel is dark, we must keep pushing forward in hopes of a better future. Because I know that somewhere beyond us there are darker tunnels and beyond the darkness is light. These tests in perseverance are prime factors that make me a strong person, mentally and physically. These factors are what inspire me to care for my autistic brother, as well as others suffering from an equally challenging situation. They push me to do my very best, so that one day I may take care of my mom, as she does for me.
I feel that this is my calling in life is to help others in any way possible. I want to leave an inspiring impact in the lives of those around me: be it one person, or millions of people. I want to be able to share a piece of my soul, heart, and mind through the conceptual things like art and words. I want to give back to the world by constructing advanced technology. I want to give back to the world by planting a tree. It is diversity in the people, their thoughts, and their action that contributes to a positive influence of the world. I want to be apart of that diversity. I want to be apart of the greater global change.
your donations will get me one step closer to this dream…
