For those whom have ever had to deal with a deadbeat roommate, may begin to understand our pains!  We are three college students (more specificity 1 college student, 1 graduate student, and 1 recent graduate), all sharing a single apartment near campus.  At the begin of the year there was 4 of us, all of whom entered into a legally binding contract with the housing management to pay for rent, electricity, and internet until the end of August of 2012. 

Despite this legally binding contract one of our fellow tenants has managed to up and leave without a trace, effectively circumventing their legal obligations, leaving us effectively responsible for picking-up their slack.  Naturally we have looked into legal solutions, but to no prevail as the away tenet has not only failed to provide a forwarding address, but have explicitly blocked us from all forms of telecommunications (you cant sue who you cant find).

None of us chose to split a small apartment 4 ways due to a love for cramped living spaces, we did so out of necessity (once the grad student finally graduates this summer they will be $50,000 in debt, another is experiencing the financial woes resulting from parents messy divorce, and the other simply dost make enough to cover their own and the defaulting tenant’s share).

State law has an especially brief window for filing for Rent related damages (1 year) after which time the collection of said debt becomes statute barred, game over, the thief wins.

To add insult to injury consider this: originally all tenets payed separate checks, if one was late one would be held accountable for the late fee; until the month before the tenet left they conveniently paid rent a day late their by giving the management the right to require one check on behalf of all.  And before leaving the tenet installed a locking door on their bedroom and made sure to leave their full length window wide open ( her room was on the 2nd floor and it took us 2 weeks to realize what they had done).

We do not deserve this injustice.  If the bad guys must win, then at least you can mitigate the impact of their heartlessness.
